Culture Shock Dalam Komunikasi Dakwah Santri Pondok Pesantren Hamalatul Quran Terhadap Peningkatan Pemahaman Keagamaan Di Pondok Pesantren Fathurrahman Batanghari Provinsi Jambi

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of culture shock in the da'wah communication of Hamalatul Quran Islamic Boarding School students, focusing on the enhancement of religious understanding at Fathurrahman Batang Hari Islamic Boarding School in Jambi Province. The present study employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing a case study approach. The subjects of this study were the first and second generations of devotion students from Hamalatul Quran assigned to Fathurrahman, as well as teachers, administrators, and local students. The data collection techniques employed in this study included participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and content documentation. The theoretical framework employed is Intercultural Adaptation Theory, as proposed by Kim Young Yun. The findings suggest that students who demonstrate a high degree of devotion encounter significant physical and psychological disorientation, predominantly attributable to linguistic barriers (e.g., Malay dialects), variations in behavioral norms (e.g., student etiquette/adab), climatic factors, and dietary differences. While verbal social interaction is relatively unproblematic, non-verbal interactions encounter significant challenges due to the presence of contrasting regional habits. However, the intensive and adaptive approach carried out by devotion students gradually succeeds in increasing the learning motivation and religious understanding of local students, although this increase is not yet significant due to unsupportive family environmental factors.
