Abstract

This study examines the impact of social media on users' content consumption patterns, focusing on the role of algorithms in creating the phenomenon of "brainrot." Brainrot refers to a condition in which individuals experience a decline in thinking quality due to excessive exposure to low-quality or repetitive content on social media platforms. Using a qualitative study approach, this research gathers data from in-depth interviews with active social media users and content analysis of algorithm-suggested materials. The findings indicate that social media algorithms tend to prioritize content that drives high engagement, such as sensational or controversial content, leading to a cycle of repetitive and less educational content consumption. Additionally, participants reported difficulties in controlling the time spent and the types of content they consume, ultimately affecting their productivity and mental well-being. This study concludes that interventions from both platforms and users are necessary to mitigate the negative impact of algorithms on content consumption patterns and prevent brainrot. Recommendations include improving digital literacy, developing more ethical algorithms, and increasing user awareness in managing social media usage.
